Urban legend says that the name “Bird” market was given because of the tradition on April 7 - the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - to release birds, mainly pigeons, into the wild.

In 1921, the Bird Market moved to the circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard and, partially, to Konnaya Square. Moscow was growing, so “Bird” was constantly moved to the outskirts of the city. In 1938, the market moved to the Taganskaya metro area on Kalitnikovskaya Street, and in 2001 - to the territory of the Sadovod shopping center.
